Experimental Jetset’s 2003 design used the visual language of Ono with the written language of Marinetti, whose poem visualized sound through typography. The original language intended to glorify war with the impressions of battle, while Jetset’s interpretation combines two countercultural reactions to create a humorous ambivalence.
Lennon and Ono’s 1969 War Is Over campaign represents a conflation of avant-garde artistic practice with advertising, the ultimate in pop culture. The billboards and posters, part of Lennon and Ono’s conceptual work during this period, represent an unprecedented cross-pollination between the world of pop culture and high culture — and between the worlds of entertainment and counterculture.
With entrusted power and control, does creating chance makes a difference on a much bigger platform. Can an act of intervention make a profound graphic statements of our generation, like George Lois’s covers of Esquire in which he used a mainstream men’s style magazine with covers that skewered Richard Nixon, racism, and the Vietnam War. Can an act of graphic intervention save the world?
Intervention for the common good What is the use of intervention without a purpose? Our interventionist powers are limited but not unimportant. I am interested in how I can redress designer’s role in the age of conflicting political views with new sensibility. Intervention with a voice, the streets are the main stage for oppositional activity.
We all know what it is to track and to be tracked.
Like many people, I feel the need to record and track the things that interest me or inform my work, ideas, and way of being in the world.
I was raised in suburban America by two immigrant parents. My father was born in Greece during World War II to a family and nation decimated by war. My mother was raised in El Salvador under the premise that God was the central figure in all matters. And as a child, my parents moved the family away from a civil war that had begun to tear apart the idea of peace in El Salvador.
Despite having parents who were very different from one another, contradictions in social orders have always baffled me and continue to do so. Furthermore, the current political leadership in Washington has been a failure on the issues I hold dearly. In effect, these events have caused me a need to articulate local and global issues in which I can empathize with.
I’m also a designer working in a professional field that is based on tracking things. For example, History itself is an archive of material and that material can be said to be graphic design. For this reason I have been interested in the works of those who track, collect and map information into diary type systems or track the conditions of power, social orders, religion, race and politics.
The Vietnam War reenacters not only reveal how the impulse to take on another identity can be meaningful to an individual, but also how intentional complicity in these identities can create community. In other words, when a group conspires to pass together and with each other, a community is defined.
On-May Lee embeds herself as a photographer within reenactment groups that carefully plot and recreate particular battles of the Vietnam War. In order to maintain historical accuracy, these groups required her to act as a wartime journalist, restricting her access to certain maneuvers.
I grew up in Seoul, Korea, a city that became increasingly urbanized after the Korean War.
Through out my life, the environment has changed from unstructured to structured, inefficient to efficient. At least, it seemed that way.
Vietnam War hero and Republican Presidential candidate John McCain uses Optima in his logo. Knocked out in white and paired with a star and bars, the logo is a statement of extreme calculation and concision.
